I often get asked about what I put in my morning cup of joe. Here is a deep dive into my morning fuel of choice; bulletproof coffee. It’s really really good. I love it!

This rather astounding coffee, with a weird mix of ingredients, appeared on my radar few years back when I was researching and testing keto diets. This coffee was a big part of it. And, since then, it has been my morning cup of joe.

I usually start my day with a big cup of bulletproof coffee which comes around 300ml, and has approximately 400 calories. Before my early morning training rides or runs, I wouldn’t take any other fuel unless the training is longer than 90 minutes. Even on the days that I don’t train, it is my go to drink before sunrise.

This keeps me going for 3 to 4 hours without breakfast. I don’t feel hungry, or get cravings for anything else. And, I am able to focus really well and do whatever I plan to do that morning. It makes me more productive, even on the days I don’t get enough sleep.

Ingredients

Black Coffee: home brewed or even an instant cup of Nescafé Gold (without sugar) would do. I haven’t got a home brewing setup yet. So, I make a big cup of ordinary black coffee (with 3 teaspoons of coffee).

Unsalted Butter: unsalted grass-fed butter. Grass-fed butter might be a difficult find in Male’, and would be expensive too. I use Anchor brand unsalted butter. There are many options to choose from. Whichever brand you choose, make sure it is “unsalted.”

Coconut Oil: you can use coconut oil or MCT oil. I started with homemade coconut oil, and later got MCT oil from Amazon. MCT oil doesn’t have much of a taste. It will be better for those of you who don’t like the distinct taste of coconut in your coffee. I prefer the taste of coconut oil in my coffee, and now I am using bottled coconut oil from Enzi.

Preparation

  1. First, I make a big cup of black coffee with 3 teaspoons
  2. Pour the cup of coffee into the blender cup.
    • I use a Nutri Ninja blender.
    • It’s easy to use and much easier to clean.
    • You can use any blender/mixer of your choice.
  3. Put 1.5 teaspoon unsalted butter into the coffee.
  4. Put 1.5 teaspoon coconut oil
  5. Blend for about 30 seconds.
    • Skim off and throw away the froth. I like it better that way.
  6. ENJOYYY!!! ☕️

The taste

Now you’d be wondering how it tastes like. Well, bulletproof coffee doesn’t taste anything like “black coffee”. The butter and coconut oil mix makes it really creamy, and there’s a slight sweet taste to it. And, yeah, it tastes and smells like coconut.

If you like a different flavor, try adding a dash of cinnamon powder. I do it sometimes. In addition, cinnamon offers many health benefits including the boosting of immune system, regulating blood sugar, and promoted blood circulation. It is also good for your teeth. Read more here.

This high fat coffee is a really good addition, if you are going keto or working towards a low-carb and high-fat diet. I have read quite a lot on keto diets, and tried it myself a while back. It works! But with work, traveling and the lifestyle in Male’, I found it hard to maintain. Maybe I’ll give it a try again.

Ketosis is when your body burns fat as a primary fuel for energy instead of carbohydrates. Making your body burn fat for fuel more than carbohydrates has a massive impact on your performance in any endurance sport. It doesn’t happen overnight. This adaptation could take 3 to 4 weeks. I am no expert on the subject – more in this link.

I don’t take this coffee as part of a diet or strict adherence to anything for that matter. I really like the taste, and the fact that it makes me so full, wide awake, focused, and energetic. It even motivates me to wake up, which is great.
